Ingredient Tips & Substitutions
Brown Sugar - We used brown sugar for this recipe because it contains molasses. Molasses helps keep the consistency of the sauce to have a medium thickness opposed to being runny. Also the molasses helps sweeten up the sauce, opposed to traditional white sugar, which is not as rich or sweet because white sugar does not contain molasses.
Ketchup - The recipe requires ketchup to help with the sauce consistency and overall flavour. Feel free to use traditional ketchup. We used Good Food For Good Ketchup because the entire bottle of ketchup is sweetened with just ONE date. If extra sugar is your thing, opt out for traditional ketchup.
Whisky - The type of whisky definitely matters when it comes to our sweet and smoky whisky bbq sauce. It's one of the main ingredients! We used Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey for this recipe because of how smooth and sweet Jack Daniel's whisky is. Find a similar whisky if you do not have Jack Daniel's on hand. Look for a whisky that is more on the sweeter side for this bbq sauce recipe.
