What to Eat Chili Oil With?

I love a good chili oil drizzled over my homemade momos (similar to dumplings). But chili oil works with just about any dish where a little kick of spice could be added. Here are 7 ways to to eat chili oil:

Homemade Crispy Chili Oil Recipe

  • 3 cups dried red chillies

  • ¼ cup fried shallots

  • 3 tbsp fried garlic

  • 3 whole star anise

  • 4 green cardamom pods, crushed

  • 2 tbsp finely chopped ginger

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 2 tbsp sea salt

  • 10 garlic cloves, finely sliced

  • 3 cups vegetable oil or peanut oil

Ingredient Tips & Substitutions


Sugar - If you are conscious about adding refined sugar, opt for brown sugar or honey to sweeten.


Oil - Peanut oil or vegetable oil works best for this recipe, olive oil is fine too, however it adds an olive flavour to the overall condiment.







Homemade Crispy Chili Oil Instructions & Steps


Step One

Cut your dried chilis in half and deseed (too much chili seeds can make your oil bitter).

Place the dried chillies in a food processor and blend until roughly chopped. (Medium size chili)


Step Two Pour the chopped chillies into a medium to large bowl. Add the fried shallots, fried garlic, star anise, cardamom pods, ginger, sugar, and salt. Set aside for later.


Step Three In a small pot, place the garlic and the oil. Place over a medium heat and allow the oil to heat up and start sizzling. Cook the garlic for another 2-3 minutes or until the garlic is golden crisp. Turn the heat off and let the oil to cool for 2-3 minutes. Then carefully pour the warm oil over the chilli mixture. Mix until well combined.


Step Four Transfer the chilli oil mixture into a jar of choice. Serve after 24 hours. The longer it sits the more potent the flavours and colour becomes, making for a richer taste.
